Looking After Your Voice Over the Festive Season
by Jamie Read Vocal Coach & Singing Teacher - December 2025
The festive season is one of the busiest — and most demanding — times of year for the voice. Between carol singing, end-of-term performances, social events, late nights, cold weather and maybe one too many celebratory drinks, it’s no surprise that many singers start January feeling vocally exhausted.
As a vocal coach and singing teacher, I see the same pattern every year: talented singers pushing through tired voices, hoarseness and vocal strain, often without realising the long-term impact. Whether you’re a professional performer, a choir member, or simply someone who loves to sing, a little care now can make a huge difference.
Here are my top tips for protecting your voice over the festive period — and setting yourself up for a strong start to the new year.
1. Hydration Is Non-Negotiable
Your voice works best when your body is properly hydrated. Cold weather, central heating and alcohol all contribute to dehydration, which directly affects vocal fold flexibility.
Vocal coach tip:
Sip water little and often throughout the day rather than gulping large amounts in one go. Herbal teas (non-caffeinated) are also great.
If you want targeted support, I recommend using specialist vocal health tools designed specifically for singers. You can find my trusted selection of vocal care products here: 👉 https://www.jamie-read.co.uk/shop
2. Warm Up — Even for “Casual” Singing
Festive singing often happens spontaneously: around a piano, at a carol service, or after a few drinks at a party. This is exactly when singers are most vulnerable to strain.
As a singing teacher, I always encourage singers to:
- Do 5–10 minutes of gentle warm-ups before singing
- Focus on breath, resonance and light coordination
- Avoid forcing high or loud singing when cold
Even a few simple humming or lip-trill exercises can protect your voice enormously.
3. Be Mindful of Background Noise
Festive environments are loud. Talking over music, crowds and general hubbub leads many singers to unknowingly shout — one of the fastest ways to fatigue your voice.
Singer survival tip:
If you’re in a noisy room, get closer to the person you’re speaking to instead of raising your voice. Your vocal folds will thank you the next morning.
4. Alcohol, Late Nights & Recovery
Alcohol dries the voice and reduces physical awareness, making singers more likely to push without realising it. Late nights also limit vocal recovery time.
That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy yourself — just be strategic:
- Drink water alongside alcohol
- Avoid singing at full volume late at night
- Build in vocal rest the following day
Many of the singers I work with are surprised how much vocal recovery tools can help during this period. I stock several singer-specific products that support hydration, steam inhalation and vocal comfort: 👉 https://www.jamie-read.co.uk/shop
5. Don’t Ignore Warning Signs
Hoarseness, loss of range, pitch instability and vocal fatigue are all signs that your voice needs rest and care.
As a vocal coach, my advice is simple: Pain is never part of healthy singing.
If symptoms last more than a few days, reduce vocal load and seek professional guidance before pushing on.
6. Think Long-Term, Not Just Festive
The festive season is short — but your voice needs to last all year.
Working with an experienced singing teacher can help you:
- Build sustainable vocal technique
- Understand your vocal limits
- Develop warm-ups and cool-downs that actually work for your voice
If improving your vocal health is one of your goals for the new year, now is the perfect time to reflect on how you look after your instrument.
Final Thoughts from Jamie Read
Your voice is not replaceable. Treating it with care over the festive season isn’t about missing out — it’s about making sure you can continue singing confidently, comfortably and joyfully.
Whether you’re a professional singer, a passionate amateur, or someone who just loves a good carol, small habits make a big difference.

Finding Your Voice in Musical Theatre: Singing for the Stage
by Jamie Read (West End Vocal Coach) - August 2025
Musical theatre singing is one of the most exciting – and challenging – vocal styles to master. Whether you dream of becoming a West End singer, performing in community theatre, or simply want to build confidence in your voice, musical theatre requires a unique blend of technique, storytelling, and vocal coaching to truly shine.
What Makes Musical Theatre Singing Different?
Unlike classical or pop singing, musical theatre demands versatility. A singer might move from a delicate ballad to a powerful belt within the same show, all while staying in character and projecting clearly to an audience. Musical theatre singers need:
Strong vocal technique – to sing healthily across different ranges and styles.
Clarity of diction – so every lyric tells the story.
Emotional connection – acting through song is at the heart of theatre.
Stamina and consistency – eight shows a week is no easy task for a West End performer!
This is why professional vocal coaching is such a vital part of a singer’s journey.
The Power of Vocal Coaching for Musical Theatre
Working with a vocal coach helps aspiring performers understand how to adapt their voices for different roles and genres. A coach can:
Develop safe and effective belting techniques used in musical theatre.
Strengthen breath support for sustained notes and dynamic expression.
Explore stylistic differences between classic musicals, modern West End shows, and even crossover pop/rock musicals.
Build confidence in auditions, where your voice is your calling card.
Many successful West End singers continue vocal coaching throughout their careers to keep their voices flexible, healthy, and stage-ready.
Why Musical Theatre Singing Matters
At its core, musical theatre singing is about storytelling. Every note, phrase, and breath carries emotion and meaning. When you train your voice for the stage, you’re not just learning how to hit the right notes – you’re learning how to move an audience, create characters, and deliver unforgettable performances.
Whether your goal is to audition for the West End, sing in amateur musical theatre productions, or simply grow as a performer, investing time in musical theatre vocal coaching can help you discover the full potential of your voice.
✨ If you’d like to explore musical theatre singing and develop your voice with expert support, I offer one-to-one vocal coaching sessions tailored to your goals – from beginners to experienced West End performers. Contact me here to start your journey.
Why Singing Technique Isn't One-Size-Fits-All
by Jamie Read (Singing Voice Expert) - July 2025
As a vocal coach and singing teacher, one of the biggest myths I see online is that there’s only one “correct” singing technique that applies to every singer and every style.
In reality, if you want your voice to sound authentic while remaining healthy, you need to understand that technique should serve the style you want to sing in.
Different Styles, Different Needs
Take breath management, for example. A classical or opera singer will use a different breath strategy, with longer phrases and a lower breath management system to support resonance in a large space. Meanwhile, a rock singer may use more aggressive airflow and a higher breath strategy to achieve a gritty sound without strain.
Or consider belting in musical theatre versus mixed belting in soul music. The theatre belt needs clarity and projection to carry over an orchestra without a microphone, while soul music often blends belt with a speech-like quality and flexibility for riffs and runs.
One technique will not give you the results you want in every style.
Why Working with a Voice Teacher Matters
It’s easy to fall into YouTube rabbit holes or try copying your favourite artists, but without the right technical foundation, you can risk strain, inconsistency, and frustration. That’s where working with a singing coach who understands the demands of different genres can transform your practice.
With Jamie Read, you get:
✅ A personalised, practical approach to make your voice efficient without losing authenticity
✅ Training that adapts to your style, whether it’s musical theatre, pop, soul, rock, or classical
✅ Clear, structured exercises to develop strength and flexibility in your chosen genre
✅ Honest, supportive feedback to help you build confidence and artistry
As a voice teacher, I believe technique should empower your unique sound, not box it in.
Let’s Find What Works for Your Voice
Your goals as a singer are personal, and your training should be too. Whether you’re a professional looking to refine your performance stamina, or an emerging singer wanting to learn how to sing safely and stylishly, working with a singing coach like Jamie Read will help you unlock your potential while keeping your voice healthy.

Why Rayvox SOVT Straws Are a Game-Changer for Singers
by Jamie Read (Vocal Coach) - June 2025
As a professional vocal coach, I’m always looking for the most effective tools to support vocal health, improve technique, and ensure longevity in a singer’s career. One of the most powerful, affordable, and easy-to-use tools I recommend to all my students is the Rayvox SOVT straw — a scientifically-backed method for optimising your vocal training and performance.
Whether you're warming up for a rehearsal, preparing for a performance, or recovering from vocal fatigue, a singing straw is an essential part of your vocal toolkit.
What Are SOVT Straws?
SOVT stands for Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract — a method where part of the vocal tract is partially closed during phonation. This creates back pressure that helps your vocal folds vibrate more efficiently, reduces strain, and encourages healthy vocal fold closure. Using a SOVT straw like those made by Rayvox helps singers:
- Warm up and cool down safely
- Build efficient breath support
- Reduce vocal fatigue
- Improve tone and control
- Develop balanced registration across the range
Why I Recommend Rayvox SOVT Straws
I’ve tried several singing straw options over the years, but Rayvox SOVT straws are truly in a league of their own. Their premium stainless steel design is not only durable and environmentally friendly, but also offers the ideal resistance needed for maximum benefit. Rayvox products are expertly engineered based on vocal science — giving singers at all levels the same high-performance experience.
And let’s be honest — they look pretty sleek too.
Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, incorporating a singing straw into your daily practice routine can transform your vocal ability. Rayvox makes it easy with straws tailored to different resistance levels, and their kits are perfect for singers, actors, and voice professionals alike.

The Power of a Great Mindset: Why Singers Need to Think Like Champions
by Jamie Read PGDip (Dist) FRSA MISM - May 2025
When people think about becoming a successful singer, they often focus on vocal technique, breathing, pitch, and performance. But as any experienced singing teacher or voice coach will tell you, mindset is just as important as vocal skill—if not more so. As a singing teacher in Thatcham, I’ve seen time and again how a singer’s attitude can shape their vocal journey more profoundly than any scale or exercise.
At Jamie Read Singing and Voice Coaching, I work with singers of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to seasoned performers. One thing remains consistent across every lesson: a positive mindset breeds vocal success.
What Does a "Great Mindset" Mean for Singers?
A great mindset for singers means:
- Believing you can grow: Many singers say "I can't sing high notes" or "I’m just not a belter." But with the right training and attitude, most vocal goals are achievable. As a dedicated voice coach, I help singers shift their thinking from fixed to growth-focused.
- Accepting vulnerability: Singing is deeply personal. Whether you're in a lesson or performing live, it takes courage to be vulnerable. A supportive singing teacher creates an environment where singers feel safe to explore and grow.
- Being open to feedback: Constructive critique is key to vocal development. The best singers embrace feedback and use it as fuel to improve.
- Staying resilient: Not every rehearsal or performance will go perfectly. That’s okay. What matters is how you bounce back. A strong mindset keeps you grounded and motivated, even when things get tough.
How Mindset Shapes Progress
At my studio in Thatcham, I often see students hit vocal plateaus. More often than not, it’s not technique holding them back—it’s mindset. That’s where having a supportive voice coach makes all the difference. We work not only on technical elements like breath support and placement, but also on confidence, mental rehearsal, and performance psychology.
By integrating mindset work into lessons, I’ve seen students smash through their limits—unlocking new range, finding authentic vocal tone, and reconnecting with the joy of singing.
Mindset in Group Settings
In my work with the Thatcham Musical Theatre Choir, mindset is just as crucial as it is in individual lessons. Group singing requires teamwork, self-belief, and the courage to be heard. Whether you're singing solo lines or blending into harmony, trusting yourself and your fellow singers is essential.
Our choir members develop more than just musical skills—they build self-esteem, emotional resilience, and social connection. And it all starts with the right mindset.
How Jamie Read Can Help
As a voice coach and singing teacher, my mission is to help every student unlock their full vocal potential. That means tailoring lessons to suit individual goals while fostering the mental tools needed for success. I draw on my experience across musical theatre, classical, and pop to create a safe, empowering space for vocal development.
If you’re based in Thatcham or the surrounding Berkshire area, or you’re looking for online support, I’d love to help you on your journey.
